The Adults curriculum is based around the traditional process of training in Seven Start Praying Mantis Kung Fu class, learning all required techniques and abilities to reach a basic instructor level, or progress to becoming an Inner door student. Training is comprehensive to learn new movements, understand techniques and applications and build internal and external abilities to perform under pressure.
What we teach is broadly structured into three main level of beginner, intermediate and advanced which relate to the conceptual levels of Li, Jing and Qi in the tradition of the style. Included are training aspects of the famous Jing Wu school of which 7 Star Praying Mantis was one of a wider selection of Arts taught.
Adults Curriculum
1 – Strength, Fitness and Flexibility
Student will build general and movement specific strength and flexibility in a traditional method. These include specific exercises and positions that allow free movement into positions ability to perform actions effectively.2 – Iron Body Conditioning
A number of key techniques are learn to develop body hardening and conditioning to specific areas to allow techniques to have maximum impact as well as condition the body to receive strikes or mentally raise pain thresholds.3 – Basic Techniques
This includes 'Ji Ben Gong' (基本功) the main basics such as punches, kicks, blocks, stances, stepping and body alignment of the Northern Seven Star Praying Mantis System, which are also shared across many Northern Gong Fu Systems. Included in this is the 14 roads of Tan Tui along with others.4 – Kung Fu Techniques Theory
This includes 12 Keywords of the Northern Praying Mantis system as well as the other key frameworks such the 7 long and 8 short, 8 hard and 12 soft, along with others. These techniques form the basis of the techniques, strategy and mindset within the system and are over lapping and interconnected.5 – Traditional Forms
The Seven Star Praying Mantis Kung Fu system has a long list of empty hand forms. In order to comprehensively cover all techniques thoroughly and understand their context for usage, student must learn and be able to perform over 20 hand forms with speed, accuracy and power.6 – Techniques and Applications
Students will learn the meaning behind form actions which are based on the 'Si Ji Fa' of 4 attacking methods of striking, kicking, throwing and grabbing (Qin Na). These are overlaid onto the theory to give the frameworks and strategy of the system. The techniques are taught through a range of drills moving to more free form actions.7 – Traditional Weapons
The curriculum includes the 5 major Chinese weapons of Staff, Saber, Straight Sword, Spear and Guandao (Halberd) as taught in the Seven Star lineage. Other short and long weapons may also be taught in addition to these and come from the 18 arms of traditional Chinese Kung fu.8 – Qi Gong & Iron Palm Internal training
Once the student is capable with the physical and mental aspects of the system, they can progress to learning and developing internal energy through the 18 Luohan Qi Gong (Xing Gong) and Iron palm techniques to elevate their abilities.
